McLaren escape with suspended three race ban

AFP/File – McLaren Mercedes’ driver Lewis Hamilton, seen here during the second practice session at the Sakhir. …
McLaren were on Wednesday handed a suspended three-race ban for bringing the sport into disrepute, motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, announced.
“They (McLaren) have demonstrated there is a complete culture change, that it’s all different to what it was,” he said after the hearing at the FIA’s headquarters at place de la Concorde.
The fall-out for McLaren has already been extensive, with the widely respected Ryan sacked, and Ron Dennis stepping aside as team boss, to be replaced by Whitmarsh.
The Briton, whose title defence has got off to a wretched start, has harvested just nine points from the first four races of the season, 22 points adrift of his compatriot Jenson Button of the Brawn team.

Clinton: US stands by Iraqis, withdrawal on track

By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer Matthew Lee, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton tried to reassure nervous Iraqis that the U.S. won’t abandon them, even as she said the American troop withdrawal would stay on schedule despite a recent surge in violence.

“Our strategy in working with you may be in a new phase, but we pledge our full and continuing commitment to Iraq and the Iraqi people,” she told a news conference after meeting Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

“As we drawn down militarily we will deepen our civilian cooperation,” Clinton said, standing beside Zebari in an auditorium at the Foreign Ministry.

The withdrawal will proceed in a “responsible and careful way,” she said, and would not affect efforts to improve Iraq’s security forces, or complete reconstruction and development projects.

Bicycling is where it is at, folks

Glad the Secretary of Transportation sees how important bicycles are in our transportation system, I want to work for the Federal Government as a bicycle transportation consultant…

Bicycling is an important factor in less carbon-intensive commuting

Of all the Fastlane entries over the first days of this Administration, the one that has generated the most responses is the one on my address to the National Bike Summit. We all know that bikers are passionate about their wheels; we also know that bicyclists are vulnerable to automobiles and need secure lanes and greater awareness from drivers. On Earth Day, it seems appropriate to talk about bicycling, not only as recreation, but as an environmentally sound commuting option. And, about what the DOT is doing to improve the cyclist’s commute.

April 22, 2009

So, a number of funding opportunities exist, but cycling advocates must get their cities and states to request funds for these purposes. Many states, counties, and municipalities have already done so.

Earth Day is today, but we’ll need the sustained engagement of bicycle commuters

‘Deeper’ recession ahead says IMF

By Steve Schifferes

Economics reporter, BBC News

IMF forecasts
The global economy is set to decline by 1.3% in 2009, in the first global recession since World War II, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says.

IMF Chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, says some countries face ‘serious balance of payment problems’

The IMF says this represents “by far the deepest post-World War II recession” with an actual decline in output in countries making up 75% of the world economy.

The prospects for world trade are even gloomier, with the IMF now forecasting world trade volumes to decline by 11% in 2009, and barely grow at all in 2010.

It is predicting that UK unemployment will rise to 9.2% by the end of 2010, compared to 6.7% at the moment.

The IMF says it is important to take urgent action to shore up the banks, and to continue with short-term fiscal stimulus plans, in order to shorten the length of the recession.

Iran’s leader sparks Western walkout at UN meeting

GENEVA – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the West of using the Holocaust as a “pretext” for aggression against Palestinians, prompting European diplomats to walk out Monday from a speech disrupted by jeering protesters in rainbow wigs tossing red clown noses at the hardline leader.

By FRANK JORDANS, Associated Press Writer Frank Jordans, Associated Press Writer

A U.N. racism conference on the eve of Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day disintegrated into chaos moments after Ahmadinejad became the first government official to take the floor. Two protesters in wigs tossed the noses at Ahmadinejad as he recited a Muslim prayer to begin his speech.

“They resorted to military aggression to make an entire nation homeless under the pretext of Jewish suffering,” he said.

A Jewish student group from France later took credit for causing the disturbance, saying members were trying to convey “the masquerade that this conference represents.”

We were powerless to stop F1 Red Bull, says Button

We were powerless to stop F1 Red Bull, says Button

Jenson Button admits he was powerless to stop Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber from dominating the Chinese Grand Prix, and is now focused on ways to halt them in Bahrain this week.

Germany’s Vettel won the rain-hit race in a one-two finish ahead of Australian teammate Webber, with championship leading Button finishing third for Brawn GP ahead of his stablemate Rubens Barrichello.

“We couldn’t challenge these people (Vettel and Webber), who were immensely quick, but it is great to score six points which is important for the consistency,” said Button, who won the opening two races of the season.

He added that after his wins in Australia and Malaysia the car was not performing as well, but insisted that would be fixed ahead this week’s fourth round of the world championships.

Team chief Ross Brawn has made clear he has lofty goals this year, saying third and fourth places was a “good result for the championship.”
